Profile approval process

Does my profile need to be approved?

Profiles added to nzflatmates must be approved before they become active on the site for other people to see. In addition, you must have an approved profile before you can contact other members on nzflatmates.

Editing your profile (e.g. changing the description or adding a photo) may cause your profile to require re-approval.

How long will it take?

Most profiles are approved within 3-4 hours, up to a maximum of 24 hours.

Why does my profile have to be approved by you?

We understand this approval process is frustrating when you just want to get on and find a flat/flatmate! The vast majority of people using nzflatmates are real, honest flat hunters like you. But unfortunately, there's always a few bad apples that spoil things for everyone. There have been instances of scammers putting up fake profiles on sites like nzflatmates, with the aim of tricking people into paying money for flats that don't exist. So we require approval for new profiles to prevent this.

Keeping our members safe and secure is really important to us. Please read our Safety Guide for more tips on staying safe.

Introduction to nzflatmates

How do I get started?

To use nzflatmates you must first create a profile. You can create a profile as either a flat looking for a flatmate, or a flatmate looking for a flat. Once you have created a profile you will be able to browse other members' profiles (we'll highlight ones which match what you're looking for). Your profile will also become visible to other people browsing nzflatmates. If you spot a flat or flatmate you like, you can send them a message. A link to your profile will be included with messages you send.

How do I create a profile?

You can create a profile by connecting your Facebook account to nzflatmates, or by signing up manually using an email address and password. Connecting to Facebook is recommended and saves time by using your name, profile picture and other information you've already supplied to Facebook. You can disconnect your Facebook account at any time.

How much does it cost?

You don't have to pay any fees to use nzflatmates. It's free to create a flat or flatmate profile, and it's free to contact flats. After you have created a profile you have the option to upgrade to Gold ($9.00 for flatmates, $14.00 for flats) which features your profile at the top of the list when other people are browsing, and makes your profile appear on the homepage for new users. For flat profiles, upgrading to Gold also provides you with access to browse, view and contact the full selection of flatmate profiles on nzflatmates.

Can anyone create a profile?

Yes - any person from any country can create a profile on nzflatmates. We do not pre-screen profiles, flats or flatmates added to the site. Please read our safety guide for information on keeping yourself safe.

Managing your account

How do I deactivate my profile?

If you're no longer looking for a flat or flatmate, you can deactivate your profile. Deactivated profiles no longer appear on the site and you will no longer receive email messages from nzflatmates or other members. You can reactivate your profile at any time.

I've forgotten my password. What do I do?

Don't worry – it happens to the best of us. Reset your password.

How do I disconnect my Facebook account?

You can disconnect from Facebook at any time. Once you disconnect, nzflatmates will no longer have access to information that you post to Facebook and you will not be able to log into nzflatmates with Facebook. You can still log in using your email address if you reset your password.

How do I unsubscribe from emails?

You can reduce or stop the automated emails that you receive from nzflatmates in Account Settings.

Completing your flat profile

Do I need to provide my address?

You must supply a location, which can be your exact address (e.g. 123 Brown St, Ponsonby) or something less specific (e.g. Brown St, Ponsonby, or merely Ponsonby).

My address cannot be found. What do I do?

If your exact address cannot be found in the database, try entering only your street or only your suburb. If you continue to have problems please contact us.

What do I enter in the "rent" field?

Enter the amount charged per week for the room only, excluding expenses. It's a good idea to detail any bond requirements and other expenses flatmates will need to pay in your profile description. Don't include these costs in your rent as that will make your flat look more expensive in comparison to others.

How do I create a great profile?

To attract the right flatmate for your flat it's important you complete all sections of your profile and provide as much information as possible. Flats with more information get more enquiries. New flatmates especially want to know who they're going to be living with, so ensure that each of the existing flatmates completes their section of the profile, including a photo.

Completing your flatmate profile

Why is there a map on my profile?

Your flatmate profile includes a map to show other members the area where you're looking for a flat. Enter a street, suburb or region to define your search area. Your search area is shown as a blue box over the map. When editing your profile, you can drag the corners of the box to resize your search area.

What do I enter in the "rent" field?

Enter the amount per week that you're willing to pay for rent, excluding expenses. This will be displayed on your profile as the maximum you're prepared to pay.

How do I create a great profile?

Complete all sections of your profile so flats have a clear picture of who you are and what you'd be like to live with. Include personal information about yourself, what you'll bring to the flat and make sure you include at least one clear photo. Profiles with more information get more enquiries, so don't be shy!

How do I browse all the flats or flatmates currently advertised?

You can browse all active profiles by clicking the "Flats" or "Flatmates" tab at the top of the page. You can filter the list of profiles by location and price. Only Gold members can view the full list of Flatmates.
